What is it?
The idea of Buy Nothing is to “Refuse, Reduce, Rethink, Reuse” in a local economy. You post anything you want to give away, lend or share. Additionally, you can ask to receive or borrow for free from your neighbors.
They are many benefits! Use it to declutter, save money and borrow and obtain things for free. The group makes you rethink consumption.
So much of the value of the Buy Nothing Project comes from the people in the group. It’s specifically local. Less miles are use to give, lend or share. It’s a great way to build community and trust in the community.
Why Buy Nothing?
You rely less on buying new. You extend the life of existing items. Something that is of no longer of use to you can be useful to someone else. “One man’s trash is another person’s treasure.” Less items to go to the landfill. Borrow something you only need occasionally.

My Personal Experience
My local group uses Facebook Groups as its platform and it’s strictly for my neighborhood. Being a part of the group has brought humor, kindness, entertainment and free stuff. It has helped me declutter from my exes lol . I’ve offered miscellaneous items I didn’t need anymore.
I’ve received a pint of Greek Yogurt and a book called “goodbye, things: The New Japanese Minimalism” by Fumio Sasaki-Thanks to the group!
I’ve seen people share their rosemary, printers, computers, plants, cooking utensil, and furniture. There are some hidden treasure, but you have to act fast to claim them.
Someone dropped a chopstick in their sink and ask the group if they had anything to pull it out. Two people offered their forceps and another a tiny grapple. Neighbors coming together to help solve problems!
During the pandemic, aka the Great Toilet Paper Shortage, people reached out and was able to get toilet paper. The most heart warming scenario I saw was when immunocompromised mom with lack of funds for food posted in need of help. A group of moms made a care package for her and delivered it. Neighbors helping neighbors in times of need.
The more you give the more you’ll receive.
I can’t wait to declutter more things!
